In Susa, Nehemiah learns from his brother Hanani that Jerusalem’s wall and gates lie in ruins and its people are in distress. He mourns, fasts and prays, confessing the sins of Israel and his own family, recalling God’s promise through Moses to regather His people, and asking favor with the king he serves.
