Zephaniah 2 Devotional
Hidden on the Day of Anger
“Seek the LORD, all you humble of the earth who carry out His justice. Seek righteousness; seek humility. Perhaps you will be sheltered on the day of the LORD’s anger.”Zephaniah 2:3 (BSB)
Zephaniah insists there is still time. He calls the shameful nation to gather itself before the decree takes effect and the day blows past like chaff (2:1-2). Then he speaks to the humble, people who already do what God requires, and urges them to seek the LORD, to seek righteousness and humility, because perhaps they will be sheltered on the day of his anger (2:3).
The rest of the chapter moves from nation to nation: the Philistine cities, Moab and Ammon, Cush, and finally Assyria and Nineveh (2:4-15). What ties these judgments together is pride. Moab and Ammon taunted God's people (2:8-10), and Nineveh, carefree and secure, told herself there was no one else besides her (2:15). Yet even here the LORD promises that nations on every shore will bow down and worship him (2:11). Safety on that day is not found in self-confidence. It is found by the humble who seek him, and that invitation is still open.
To think about: What would humbly seeking the LORD look like for you this week, rather than leaning on your own confidence?
