Zephaniah 3 Devotional
Delighted Over With Song
“The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save. He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you with His love; He will rejoice over you with singing.””Zephaniah 3:17 (BSB)
Zephaniah 3 opens with a woe on Jerusalem itself. The city listens to no one and accepts no correction. Its princes, judges, prophets, and priests are all corrupt (3:1-4). Yet in the middle of that city the LORD is righteous and does no wrong, bringing his justice to light morning after morning (3:5).
Then the chapter turns. God promises to purify the speech of the peoples so they can call on him together, leave a humble remnant who trust in his name, and take away his people's punishment (3:9-15). A book that began with a day of wrath ends with God himself rejoicing. He is the mighty one who saves, present among his people, and he calms them with his love and celebrates over them in song (3:17). Jesus spoke of the same kind of joy in heaven over a single sinner who repents (Luke 15:7). If you belong to him, God does not merely tolerate you. He delights in you, and your confidence before him can rest there.
To think about: How might your day look different if you believed that God delights over his people rather than merely putting up with them?
