Zephaniah 1 Devotional
The Danger of Settled Comfort
“And at that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish the men settled in complacency, who say to themselves, ‘The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.’”Zephaniah 1:12 (BSB)
Zephaniah opens with judgment as wide as creation, sweeping away people, animals, birds, and fish (1:2-3). Then it narrows to Judah. God names those who bow to the stars on their rooftops, those who swear by the LORD and by Milcom in the same breath, and those who have simply stopped seeking him (1:4-6). Divided loyalty and drifting are as serious as open idolatry.
One verse is especially searching. The LORD will go through Jerusalem with lamps and find the people who have settled into comfort, who tell themselves that God will do nothing at all, good or bad (1:12). Their unspoken belief is that God does not matter. The rest of the chapter answers it. The day of the LORD is near and coming fast, a day of distress and darkness, and neither silver nor gold will rescue anyone (1:14-18). Yet a God who warns has not given up on those he warns. His warning is meant to wake you before the day comes, not to leave you without hope.
To think about: Where have you quietly begun to live as though God will do nothing, and what would it look like to seek him there?
