Revelation 14 Devotional

Labor That Is Never Lost

“And I heard a voice from heaven telling me to write, “Blessed are the dead—those who die in the Lord from this moment on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labors, for their deeds will follow them.””Revelation 14:13 (BSB)

Revelation 14 sets two scenes side by side. First, the Lamb stands on Mount Zion with the 144,000, who bear his and his Father's name and follow him wherever he goes (14:1-4). Then three angels fly through heaven. The first proclaims an eternal gospel to every nation, calling all people to worship the Creator (14:6-7). The second announces that Babylon has fallen (14:8). The third warns that those who worship the beast will drink the full strength of God's wrath (14:9-11). The chapter ends with the earth harvested and the winepress of wrath (14:14-20).

These warnings are given to steady the faithful, not to unsettle them. Right after them comes a call for the endurance of the saints (14:12), and then a voice from heaven blesses those who die as the Lord's own. They will rest from their work, and what they have done goes with them (14:13). Nothing done in faith is wasted, even when it seems to end in loss. Your faithful work today, however small, is known and kept by God.

To think about: What faithful work feels unseen or wasted to you right now, and how does this promise change the way you see it?

About Revelation 14: The Lamb on Mount Zion and the Harvest

The Lamb stands on Mount Zion with the 144,000. Three angels proclaim the eternal gospel, the fall of Babylon, and judgment on those who worship the beast, and the faithful dead are called blessed. The earth is then reaped in a grain harvest and a grape harvest trodden in the winepress of God's wrath.
