Revelation 13 Devotional

The Call to Endure

“And all who dwell on the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written from the foundation of the world in the Book of Life belonging to the Lamb who was slain.”Revelation 13:8 (BSB)

Revelation 13 describes power that demands worship. A beast rises from the sea with authority given by the dragon, speaking arrogant words against God and making war on the saints (13:1-7). The whole world marvels and asks who could fight it (13:3-4). A second beast, with horns like a lamb but the voice of a dragon, performs signs and pressures everyone to worship the first, until no one can buy or sell without its mark (13:11-17). Evil here imitates God: a wound that heals, a counterfeit lamb, a mark on the forehead.

The chapter does not ask its readers to panic. It calls for wisdom, and for endurance and faithfulness from God's people (13:10, 18). And it gives one fixed point. Those who refuse to worship the beast are those whose names were written, before the world was founded, in the slain Lamb's book of life (13:8). Their security was settled long before the beast arose. When the pressure to bow feels overwhelming, remember whose book holds your name.

To think about: What pressures in your life push you to give your trust or loyalty to something other than God?

About Revelation 13: The Two Beasts

A beast rises from the sea with authority from the dragon, blaspheming God and making war on the saints, and the whole earth worships it except those in the Lamb's book of life. A second beast from the earth deceives people into worshiping the first and taking its mark.
