Psalm 95 Devotional

Listening While It Is Today

“O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.”Psalm 95:6 (BSB)

Psalm 95 opens with an invitation to sing and shout for joy to the God who saves (95:1). He is the great King over every so-called god. The deepest places and the highest mountains are in his hand, and he made both sea and land (95:3-5). So the invitation deepens: come, bow low, and kneel before the one who made us, because we are the flock he tends (95:6-7).

Then the tone changes. When God speaks today, his people must not grow stubborn as their ancestors did at Meribah and Massah, who tested him even after seeing his works (95:7-9). That generation never entered God's rest (95:10-11). Hebrews takes up this warning for believers, urging them to encourage one another daily while today lasts, so that sin's deceit hardens no one (Hebrews 3:12-13). It also promises that a Sabbath rest still remains for God's people (Hebrews 4:9). Worship and warning belong together here. The God who invites you to kneel is still speaking, and his rest is still open.

To think about: Where might you be hardening your heart to something God is saying, and what would it look like to listen today?

About Psalm 95: A Call to Worship and a Warning

Israel is summoned to sing and to bow in worship before God, the great King who made land and sea and shepherds His people. The psalm then warns against hardening hearts as the wilderness generation did at Meribah and Massah, who were barred from God's rest, a warning Hebrews applies to believers.
