Psalm 94 Devotional
Comfort When Anxiety Overwhelms
“When anxiety overwhelms me, Your consolation delights my soul.”Psalm 94:19 (BSB)
Psalm 94 calls on God as Judge of the earth to rise and repay the proud (94:1-2). The wicked are crushing God's people. They kill widows, foreigners, and orphans, and they tell themselves God is not watching (94:5-7). The psalmist answers with a simple argument. The one who made ears can surely hear, and the one who shaped eyes can surely see (94:9). God knows every human thought (94:11).
Then the psalm turns personal. The psalmist asks who will stand up for him against evildoers, and admits that without the LORD's help he would already lie in the silence of death (94:16-17). When he felt his foot slipping, God's loving devotion held him up (94:18). When anxious thoughts multiplied within him, God's comfort brought joy to his soul (94:19). The God who sees the oppressor also sees the anxious heart. His justice will come, and his people are not abandoned while they wait (94:14). You do not have to settle every wrong yourself, or carry your anxious thoughts alone.
To think about: What anxious thoughts have been multiplying in you lately, and how could you bring them to God for his comfort today?
