Psalm 93 Devotional

Mightier Than the Breakers

“Above the roar of many waters—the mighty breakers of the sea—the LORD on high is majestic.”Psalm 93:4 (BSB)

Psalm 93 is only five verses long, but it says something enormous. The LORD is King. He wears majesty like clothing and strength like armor, and because he rules, the world stands firm (93:1). His throne was set up long ago, and he himself has existed from all eternity (93:2). His rule is not new, and it is not temporary.

Then the floods rise. The rivers lift their voices, and the seas pound with crashing waves (93:3). The psalm does not pretend the waters are quiet. It simply sets them beside God. Louder than the thundering waters and stronger than the waves, the LORD in the heights is greater still (93:4). The last verse turns from his power to his word and his holiness. His decrees can be fully trusted, and holiness marks his house for all time (93:5). Whatever is roaring in your life, it is not louder than the God who reigns above it. His word can be trusted when everything else is churning.

To think about: What feels loudest and most overwhelming in your life right now, and how does God's reign above the floods speak to it?
