Psalm 77 Devotional
Footprints in the Sea
“Your path led through the sea, Your way through the mighty waters, but Your footprints were not to be found.”Psalm 77:19 (BSB)
Psalm 77 is written from a sleepless night. Asaph cries aloud to God, stretches out his hands through the dark, and refuses to be comforted (77:1-2). God has kept his eyes from closing, and he is too troubled to speak (77:4). The questions pour out. Will the Lord reject forever? Has his loving devotion ended? Has he forgotten to be gracious (77:7-9)?
But then he makes a choice. He will remember the deeds of the LORD and think through his wonders of long ago (77:11-12). His mind goes to the sea. The waters saw God and trembled, thunder rolled, and lightning lit the world (77:16-18). God's path led straight through the mighty waters, yet his footprints could not be seen (77:19). He guided his people like a flock through Moses and Aaron (77:20). His way runs where no way seems possible, and his steps are not always visible while you walk. Remembering what he has done is how faith keeps walking until he brings you through.
To think about: What has God done in the past that you could deliberately remember tonight, when his way forward seems hidden?
