Psalm 76 Devotional

Weapons Broken in Zion

“when God rose up to judge, to save all the lowly of the earth. Selah”Psalm 76:9 (BSB)

Psalm 76 celebrates God's victory from his dwelling in Zion. There he broke the flaming arrows, the shields, and the swords (76:3). Brave warriors lie stripped and asleep forever, unable even to lift their hands, and at a single rebuke from God both horse and rider fall still (76:5-6). The army did not lose to a stronger army. It fell to God's word.

That raises the question the psalm asks plainly: who can stand before God's anger (76:7)? No one. Yet the purpose of his judgment comes as a relief. God rose to judge in order to save the humble everywhere (76:8-9). His power is aimed at rescuing the weak. The psalm even says that human rage will end up bringing him praise (76:10). So the psalm calls everyone to make vows to the LORD and keep them, and to bring gifts to the one who deserves reverence (76:11). Armies fall silent before him, yet he stands on the side of the humble.

To think about: What power or pressure in your life seems unstoppable, and how does God's power to save the lowly change your view of it?
