Psalm 75 Devotional

Only God Lifts Up

“but it is God who judges; He brings down one and exalts another.”Psalm 75:7 (BSB)

Psalm 75 begins with thanks, because God's name is near (75:1). Then God himself speaks. When the time he has chosen arrives, he will judge fairly (75:2). When the whole world shakes, he is the one holding up its pillars (75:3). He warns the arrogant not to boast and the wicked not to raise their horns, a picture of proud strength, against heaven (75:4-5).

The psalmist then states the principle behind it. Promotion does not come from the east, the west, or the desert. God is the judge; he brings one person down and raises another up (75:6-7). The wicked will drink to the dregs the cup of judgment in the LORD's hand (75:8), while the righteous will be lifted up (75:10). Mary sang the same truth when she praised God for bringing rulers down and lifting up the humble (Luke 1:52). Your standing is not finally decided by competition or connections. It rests with the God who holds the earth steady, and that frees you to stop grasping.

To think about: Where are you tempted to push for your own advancement, and what would it look like to leave your standing in God's hands?

About Psalm 75: God the Judge Who Humbles and Exalts

The people thank God, and God Himself answers that He will judge with justice at the time He chooses and holds the earth steady. The proud are warned that only God lifts people up or brings them down, and the wicked must drink the cup of His judgment while the righteous are raised.
