Psalm 63 Devotional

A Love Worth More Than Life

“Because Your loving devotion is better than life, my lips will glorify You.”Psalm 63:3 (BSB)

The heading places Psalm 63 in the Judean wilderness (63:1), and the dry land shapes the prayer. David earnestly seeks God and thirsts for him like a body longing for water in a parched place (63:1). He remembers seeing God's power and glory in the sanctuary (63:2). Then he says something remarkable. God's loving devotion is worth more to him than life itself (63:3).

That conviction turns his thirst into satisfaction. He will bless God as long as he lives, and his soul is filled as if with the richest food (63:4-5). Even at night, lying awake through the watches, he thinks of God and sings in the shadow of his wings (63:6-7). One verse holds the whole relationship together. David clings to God, and God's right hand holds him up (63:8). His grip is real, but God's grip is stronger. Seasons that feel dry and empty can become places where God himself is found to be enough.

To think about: What would change if you treasured God's steadfast love as better than anything else this life could give you?

About Psalm 63: Thirsting for God in the Wilderness

In the Judean wilderness David longs for God like a thirsty body in a dry land. He praises God because His love is worth more than life, remembers Him through the night, rests in God's upholding hand, and expects his enemies to fall while the king rejoices.
