Psalm 62 Devotional

Where the Soul Finds Rest

“Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge. Selah”Psalm 62:8 (BSB)

Psalm 62 says one thing over and over. David's soul finds rest in God alone; God alone is his rock, his salvation, and his fortress (62:1-2, 62:5-6). Around him are people trying to topple him like a leaning wall, blessing him with their lips while cursing him inside (62:3-4). Instead of being shaken, he keeps returning his soul to the one place it can rest.

Then he invites the people to do the same: trust God at all times and pour out their hearts before him (62:8). He names the false refuges too. People of low rank and high rank alike weigh less than a breath on the scales (62:9). Stolen goods are a false hope, and growing riches are no place to set the heart (62:10). The psalm ends with two truths God has spoken: power belongs to God, and so does loving devotion (62:11-12). A God with only power would be frightening, and one with only love would be helpless. Because he has both, a restless heart can find rest in him.

To think about: What have you been leaning on for security, and what would it look like to pour out your heart to God about it today?

About Psalm 62: Quiet Trust in God Alone

David declares that his rest and salvation come from God alone, even while two-faced enemies try to bring him down. He urges the people to trust God and open their hearts to Him, warns against trusting wealth or force, and affirms that power and love belong to God, who repays all.
