Psalm 64 Devotional

Plots God Turns Around

“Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in Him; let all the upright in heart exult.”Psalm 64:10 (BSB)

Psalm 64 is a prayer against a secret conspiracy. David asks God to hide him from the schemes of the wicked, whose words cut like swords and fly like arrows from hiding (64:2-4). They talk about where to hide their traps, ask who could possibly see them, and boast that they have perfected their plan (64:5-6).

Then the psalm turns. God shoots his own arrows, and suddenly they are wounded (64:7). The weapon they aimed at others turns against them; their own tongues bring them down (64:8). Their plan was secret, but it was never hidden from God. The result reaches beyond David. All people will fear God, tell what he has done, and ponder his works (64:9), while the righteous rejoice and shelter in him (64:10). Schemes may be hidden from you, but never from him. You do not have to answer arrows with arrows. You can take refuge in the God who sees every plan.

To think about: Whose words have wounded you, and how might trusting God's justice free you from answering them in kind?
