Psalm 28 Devotional

When Heaven Seems Silent

“The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart rejoices, and I give thanks to Him with my song.”Psalm 28:7 (BSB)

Psalm 28 opens with a fear many believers know: that God will stay silent. David calls to the LORD as his Rock and says that if God does not answer, he will be like those going down to the grave (28:1). He asks not to be swept away with the wicked, people who talk of peace with their neighbors while hiding malice in their hearts (28:3).

Then he prays for justice in strong words, asking God to pay them back for their deeds (28:4). That is a hard line to read. But notice where David takes his anger. He does not plot his own revenge. He brings it to God, the only judge who sees hearts, and leaves the repayment there. Then the psalm turns. The LORD has heard his cry for mercy, and his heart rejoices with thanks (28:6-7). The prayer ends far beyond David himself, asking God to save and bless his people, to be their shepherd, and to carry them always (28:9). Silence is not God's final answer. He hears, and he carries.

To think about: What anger or hurt could you hand over to God as judge, instead of carrying it yourself?

About Psalm 28: A Cry Answered With Thanksgiving

David begs the LORD, his Rock, not to stay silent, and asks God to repay deceitful evildoers who ignore His works. The psalm then turns to praise because God has heard his plea, and it closes with a prayer that God would save, shepherd, and carry His people.
