Psalm 29 Devotional
Thunder and Peace
“The LORD gives His people strength; the LORD blesses His people with peace.”Psalm 29:11 (BSB)
Psalm 29 is a storm set to music. It begins by calling the heavenly beings to give the LORD the glory his name deserves (29:1-2). Then the storm rolls in. Seven times the psalm speaks of the voice of the LORD: thundering over the waters, breaking the cedars of Lebanon, flashing with fire, shaking the wilderness, stripping the forests bare (29:3-9). Nothing in creation can stand against it, and in his temple everyone cries out his glory (29:9).
The ending is unexpected. After all that power, the psalm closes quietly. The LORD is seated as King above the flood, reigning forever, and he gives strength to his people and blesses them with peace (29:10-11). The same voice that splinters cedars speaks peace to those who belong to him. The God who rules the storm is not merely a stronger storm. He is a King who uses his strength for the good of his people. Jesus showed that same authority when he rebuked the wind and the sea fell calm (Mark 4:39).
To think about: What storm feels most powerful in your life right now, and what would it mean to ask the King over the flood for his peace in it?
