Psalm 27 Devotional

The One Thing Worth Asking

“One thing I have asked of the LORD; this is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and seek Him in His temple.”Psalm 27:4 (BSB)

Fearless questions open this psalm. If the LORD is David's light, salvation, and stronghold, whom should he fear (27:1)? Even if an army camps around him, his heart will stay steady (27:3). Then he names the one thing he asks above all else: to live in the LORD's house all his days, to gaze on God's beauty, and to seek him there (27:4). His security is not the absence of enemies. It is the presence of God.

Yet the psalm is not all confidence. In the second half David pleads with God not to hide his face, not to turn him away, not to abandon him (27:9). He admits that even a father and mother might forsake a person, but the LORD will take him in (27:10). His hope is not that the trouble ends at once, but that he will see the LORD's goodness in the land of the living (27:13). So the psalm closes by urging, twice, patient waiting for the LORD (27:14). Waiting is part of trust, not a failure of it.

To think about: If you could ask God for only one thing in this season, what would it be, and how does David's request reshape yours?
