Psalm 134 Devotional
Blessing in the Night Watch
“May the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth, bless you from Zion.”Psalm 134:3 (BSB)
The songs of ascents end with a short call in the dark. The LORD's servants who serve by night in his house are told to lift their hands toward the sanctuary and bless him (134:1-2). They work after the crowds have gone home, at hours no one else sees, and the psalm treats their service as worship.
Then the direction reverses. Having been called to bless the LORD, they receive a blessing from the Maker of heaven and earth, given from Zion (134:3). Our blessing of God adds nothing to him. His blessing of us gives everything. A journey that began among liars in Psalm 120 ends in God's house, under his blessing. Jesus said the Father notices what is done out of sight and rewards it (Matthew 6:6). Faithfulness in unseen places, at unnoticed hours, is not lost on God. What you do today that no one notices can be done as worship.
To think about: What unseen task in your week could you offer to God as worship, trusting that he notices it?
