Psalm 135 Devotional

Chosen as His Treasure

“For the LORD has chosen Jacob as His own, Israel as His treasured possession.”Psalm 135:4 (BSB)

Psalm 135 calls the servants who stand in the LORD's house to praise his name, because he is good and his name is lovely (135:1-3). Then it gives a reason that may surprise: the LORD has chosen Jacob as his own, Israel as his treasured possession (135:4). Praise begins with being chosen.

The rest of the psalm shows what kind of God does the choosing. He does whatever pleases him in heaven, on earth, and in the depths of the seas (135:6). He struck Egypt and defeated kings like Sihon and Og to give his people their land (135:8-12). Next to him, the idols of the nations are silver and gold, with mouths that cannot speak and no breath in them (135:15-17). A God this free owed no one his choice, yet he chose a people and calls them his treasure. Peter tells believers in Jesus that they too are chosen and belong to God (1 Peter 2:9). Your worth before him rests on his choice, not on your usefulness.

To think about: How would your day look different if you lived it as someone God has chosen and treasures?

About Psalm 135: Praise for the Sovereign God of Israel

The psalmist calls the LORD's servants to praise Him because He is good, chose Israel as His own, and does whatever He pleases in all creation. He recalls the judgment on Egypt and the defeat of Sihon and Og, contrasts the living God with lifeless idols, and calls every group in Israel to bless Him.
