Psalm 133 Devotional

Unity Poured From Above

“It is like the dew of Hermon falling on the mountains of Zion. For there the LORD has bestowed the blessing of life forevermore.”Psalm 133:3 (BSB)

Headed as David's, this psalm celebrates something rarer than it should be: brothers living together in harmony (133:1). David reaches for two images to show how good it is. The first is fine oil poured on the head of Aaron the high priest, running down his beard and over the collar of his robes (133:2). The second is the dew of Hermon falling on the mountains of Zion (133:3).

Both pictures have something in common. Oil and dew come down from above. Aaron did not anoint himself, and the hills do not make their own dew. In the same way, the psalm says it is the LORD who has bestowed the blessing of life there (133:3). Real unity among God's people is his gift before it is our task. Paul urges believers to work hard at keeping the unity the Spirit gives, held together by peace (Ephesians 4:3). You cannot manufacture harmony by willpower alone, but you can guard what God has already poured out.

To think about: What could you do this week to guard the unity God has given among the believers around you?

About Psalm 133: The Blessing of Unity

David celebrates how good and delightful it is when God's people share life in harmony. He compares such unity to the anointing oil poured over Aaron the high priest and to Hermon's dew falling on Zion, where the LORD has granted lasting life and blessing.
