Psalm 132 Devotional

An Oath Greater Than a Vow

“The LORD swore an oath to David, a promise He will not revoke: “One of your descendants I will place on your throne.”Psalm 132:11 (BSB)

Psalm 132 sets two promises side by side. The first is David's. The psalm asks God to remember the hardships David endured and the vow he made not to rest until he had found a dwelling place for the LORD (132:1-5). The people recall finding the ark and going up to worship, and they ask God to arise and come to his resting place (132:6-8).

The second promise is God's, and it is far larger. The LORD swore an oath to David that he will not revoke, to place one of David's descendants on his throne (132:11). God chose Zion as his home forever, and he promises to satisfy its poor with bread, clothe its priests with salvation, and prepare a lamp for his anointed king (132:13-17). David wanted to find a home for God. God promised David a lasting throne. Peter preached that David knew of this oath and foresaw the resurrection of the Christ (Acts 2:30-31). Your devotion matters, but your hope rests on his oath, not on yours.

To think about: Where have you been resting your hope on your own promises to God rather than on his promises to you?

About Psalm 132: David's Vow and God's Oath for Zion

This song of ascents recalls David's vow to secure a home for the LORD, the finding of the ark, and a prayer for God to enter His place of rest. It then sets out God's sworn promise to keep David's heirs on the throne and His choice of Zion as His home, with blessings for its priests, its poor, and David's line.
