Psalm 102 Devotional

Years That Never End

“But You remain the same, and Your years will never end.”Psalm 102:27 (BSB)

The heading describes this as the prayer of someone afflicted and faint, pouring out a lament before the LORD (102:1). The images are stark. His days vanish like smoke, he forgets to eat, and he lies awake like a lone bird on a rooftop (102:3-7). Worst of all, he senses God's anger behind his suffering (102:10). His life feels like an evening shadow stretching toward dark (102:11).

Then the psalm turns from the sufferer to God. The LORD sits enthroned forever (102:12). He looks down from heaven to hear the groaning of prisoners and to set the condemned free (102:19-20). The sufferer's days are being cut short, yet God's years go on through every generation. Even the heavens and the earth will wear out like old clothing, while he stays the same (102:25-27). Hebrews applies these very verses to the Son, Jesus (Hebrews 1:10-12). Your strength may wither like grass, but the one you pray to does not fade, and he does not despise the prayer of the destitute (102:17).

To think about: What is wearing down your strength right now, and how does it help to bring it to a God whose years never run out?

About Psalm 102: The Prayer of an Afflicted Sufferer

An afflicted, lonely sufferer pours out his distress to God, feeling his life fade under divine displeasure. He turns to the LORD's eternal reign, trusts God to restore Zion and free prisoners, praises the unchanging Creator, in words Hebrews applies to the Son, and ends sure that God's servants' children are secure.
