Psalm 101 Devotional
Integrity Begins at Home
“I will ponder the way that is blameless—when will You come to me? I will walk in my house with integrity of heart.”Psalm 101:2 (BSB)
A king is making promises in Psalm 101, but he starts with a song. Before he says a word about his own conduct, David sings of the LORD's loving devotion and justice (101:1). His vows grow out of what God is like. Then he turns to the place where integrity is hardest to fake, his own house (101:2). He will set nothing worthless before his eyes (101:3), will not put up with secret slander or arrogance (101:5), and wants faithful people near him rather than liars (101:6-7).
Tucked into verse 2 is a small question: when will God come to him? The king cannot keep these vows by resolve alone. He needs God near. Israel's kings fell short of this psalm again and again, and only Jesus has ruled with perfect justice and mercy. Still, the pattern holds for those who belong to him. Integrity starts with a song about God's faithful love, and then it shows up in what you allow before your eyes and within your own walls.
To think about: What is one thing you have been allowing before your eyes or within your home that does not fit the God whose love you sing about?
