Psalm 100 Devotional

Sheep Who Belong to Him

“Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.”Psalm 100:3 (BSB)

Psalm 100 is short and full of joy. It calls the whole earth to shout to the LORD, to serve him gladly, and to come before him singing (100:1-2). That sounds like a command to feel happy, but the psalm grounds its joy in something solid. The LORD alone is God. He made us, and we belong to him, the flock he shepherds (100:3).

Gladness here does not start with circumstances. It starts with knowing who God is and whose we are. Because he made us, we are not our own. Because we are his flock, we are not left to look after ourselves. So the invitation is to come through his gates giving thanks and into his courts praising him (100:4). The final verse gives three reasons that never wear out. The LORD is good, his loving devotion lasts forever, and his faithfulness continues through every generation (100:5). Whatever kind of day you are facing, you can come to him with thanks, because none of those three things has changed since yesterday.

To think about: What reason for thanks could you bring to God today, simply because he is good and you belong to him?
