Proverbs 15 Devotional

Seen and Heard by the LORD

“The LORD is far from the wicked, but He hears the prayer of the righteous.”Proverbs 15:29 (BSB)

Proverbs 15 keeps reminding the reader that God is watching and listening. The LORD's eyes are everywhere, taking note of both evil and good (15:3). Even the realm of the dead lies open before him, so how much more every human heart (15:11). That could sound only like a warning. But the same chapter says the prayer of the upright is his delight (15:8) and that he hears the prayers of the righteous (15:29).

The God who sees everything is also the God who listens. He tears down the house of the proud but protects the property lines of the widow (15:25), who may have no other defender. His attention is not the cold stare of a suspicious judge. It is the attention of a God who knows the whole truth about us and still welcomes our prayers. That is why a small portion with reverence for the LORD outweighs great wealth with turmoil (15:16). For the humble, being fully seen by God becomes the very reason prayer is worth praying.

To think about: What have you been hesitant to pray about, and how does knowing that God already sees it invite you to speak to him?

About Proverbs 15: Gentle Words and Reverence for the Lord

Proverbs 15 opens with the calming power of a soft reply and returns often to wise and harmful speech. It teaches that the LORD sees every heart, delights in the prayers of the upright, and defends the widow. It also prizes a little with reverence over riches and closes by teaching that honor follows humility.
