Proverbs 16 Devotional

Plans in Higher Hands

“A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.”Proverbs 16:9 (BSB)

Two truths sit side by side in this chapter. People make plans, and they should. The chapter urges them to hand their work over to the LORD (16:3). Yet it keeps pointing past human planning to the One who actually decides. A person maps out his route, but the LORD is the one who settles where his feet land (16:9). Even a lot tossed into a lap has its outcome decided by the LORD (16:33).

This is not a reason to stop planning. It is a reason to plan without anxiety. If every outcome rested on our foresight alone, each decision would carry an unbearable weight. Instead, the God who weighs the heart also rules what happens, and nothing slips through by chance. The same chapter warns that pride leads to destruction (16:18), because pride forgets who holds the outcome. Make your plans, then hold them with open hands. The LORD who directs your steps is wiser than your best intentions, and he can be trusted with everything you cannot control.

To think about: Which plan are you holding most tightly right now, and what would it look like to commit it to the LORD with open hands?

About Proverbs 16: The Lord Directs Human Plans

Solomon's sayings stress that people make plans while the Lord weighs their motives, rules the outcome, and even decides how the lot falls. Further sayings praise just kings and honest scales, warn that pride leads to ruin, and commend gracious speech and self-control over troublemaking.
