Proverbs 12 Devotional

Words That Pierce or Heal

“Speaking rashly is like a piercing sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”Proverbs 12:18 (BSB)

Again and again, Proverbs 12 returns to the mouth. Reckless words wound like the thrust of a sword, but the speech of the wise brings healing (12:18). Truth lasts, while a lie is gone in a moment (12:19). Worry drags a heart down, and a kind word lifts it (12:25). Words either cut or cure.

Behind the sayings stands the LORD himself. He hates deceitful speech, but he delights in people who keep faith (12:22). Truthfulness matters because it reflects the God who loves truth. Every reader has said words that cannot be taken back. But the chapter also shows how much good a single word can do. Spoken at the right moment, it can lighten another person's anxiety. Paul urges believers to let nothing rotten come out of their mouths, only words that build others up and give grace to those who hear (Ephesians 4:29). The God who delights in faithful speech is also the God who gives grace, and that grace can shape the next thing you say.

To think about: Who around you is weighed down right now, and what kind word could you offer them today?
