Honest Weights and Open Hands

“Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD, but an accurate weight is His delight.”Proverbs 11:1 (BSB)

Proverbs 11 opens in the marketplace. Rigged scales disgust the LORD, but a true weight pleases him (11:1). Before any word about worship, the chapter shows God watching a merchant's hand on the balance, caring whether a customer gets what he paid for. Nothing is too ordinary for his attention.

The chapter widens from honest weights to open hands. One person gives freely and somehow ends up with more, while another holds back what he should give and grows poor (11:24). Those who refresh others are refreshed themselves (11:25). These sayings describe a pattern, not a scheme for getting rich by giving. Their point is that a generous God made a world in which generosity fits. Whoever trusts in riches will fall, but the righteous flourish like green leaves (11:28). Honest dealing and open hands grow from the same root: confidence that God sees, that God provides, and that a life is not measured by what it manages to keep.

To think about: Where in your ordinary dealings this week could honesty or generosity become a quiet act of trust in God?

About Proverbs 11: Honest Scales and Generous Hands

Sayings contrasting the upright and the wicked open with the LORD’s hatred of dishonest weights. They warn about pride, trusting in riches, gossip, and guaranteeing a stranger’s debt, praise generosity and wise counsel, and end by reasoning that if the righteous are repaid on earth, sinners surely will be.
