Proverbs 10 Devotional

Blessing Without Added Sorrow

“The blessing of the LORD enriches, and He adds no sorrow to it.”Proverbs 10:22 (BSB)

With chapter 10 the book shifts from long speeches to short, two-line sayings, most of them setting the righteous beside the wicked. The LORD does not let the righteous starve (10:3). Idle hands lead to poverty, while diligent hands bring wealth (10:4). What the LORD gives makes a person rich without trouble attached (10:22).

These are proverbs, not guarantees. They describe the normal pattern of God's world, not a promise that every faithful person will always be well fed or comfortable. Proverbs itself admits that the God-fearing may have only a little (15:16). Read as formulas, sayings like these crush the struggling and flatter the successful. Read as wisdom, they teach that God made the world so that faithfulness bears fruit over time, and that his gifts do not carry the hidden cost of treasure gained by wrongdoing (10:2). The deepest blessing is not the wealth but the Giver. The righteous stand secure forever (10:25), not because life is always easy, but because the way of the LORD is their refuge (10:29).

To think about: Have you been reading God's goodness by your circumstances, and how would it change things to trust the Giver more than the gifts?
