Proverbs 13 Devotional

When Hope Is Delayed

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but desire fulfilled is a tree of life.”Proverbs 13:12 (BSB)

One of the most honest sayings in the book sits in this chapter. When hope keeps getting put off, the heart grows sick, but a longing fulfilled is like a tree of life (13:12). Proverbs does not pretend that waiting is easy. Delay hurts, and the chapter says so.

The surrounding sayings point toward where lasting hope rests. The teaching of the wise is a spring of life that steers people away from death (13:14). The righteous shine, while the lamp of the wicked goes dark (13:9). These sayings do not promise that every longing will be met on our timetable. They describe a God who rules the world with justice, even when some good things are slow to come. The New Testament gives that hope a firmer footing. Paul says hope in God will not leave us ashamed, because God has already poured out his love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). The heartsick can bring their delays to a God whose love has already arrived.

To think about: What longing has been delayed in your life, and how might you bring that ache honestly to God today?
