Numbers 2 Devotional

Arranged Around His Presence

““The Israelites are to camp around the Tent of Meeting at a distance from it, each man under his standard, with the banners of his family.”Numbers 2:2 (BSB)

Numbers 2 is a seating chart for a nation. Three tribes camp on each side of the Tent of Meeting, each family gathered under its own banner (2:2). Judah camps on the east and sets out first (2:3, 9). When the whole camp moves, the Tent of Meeting travels in the middle with the Levites (2:17).

The layout says something before anyone speaks. Every tribe faces the same center, and that center is the place where God has chosen to dwell. No tribe owns him, and none is left out of sight of his tent. The chapter ends by saying Israel camped and set out exactly this way, as the LORD commanded (2:34). God put his dwelling in the middle of a wandering people before they arranged a single tent around it. Their whole life could be ordered around that gift. Yours can be too, around the God who has come near, rather than around whatever happens to be loudest.

To think about: What currently sits at the center of your days, and what would it look like to arrange them around God's presence instead?

About Numbers 2: The Arrangement of the Camp

The Lord arranges the twelve tribes in four camps around the tabernacle, each under its banner, with Judah on the east leading the march. The Levites carry the tent of meeting in the middle, and Israel camps and sets out just as the Lord commanded Moses.
