True or False: The total of the four camps in 2:32 is larger than the census total of 1:46 because the Levites were added in.
Answer: False
This is false. The four camps together totaled 603,550 (2:32), exactly the same number as the census in chapter 1 (1:46). No Levites were added, because they were kept out of the count of the other tribes (2:33), just as they had been left out of the first count (1:47). Their place was in the inner ring around the tabernacle, not in the four tribal camps.
- Numbers 2:32-33 (BSB)“These are the Israelites, numbered according to their families. The total of those counted in the camps, by their divisions, was 603,550. But the Levites were not counted among the other Israelites, as the LORD had commanded Moses.”The total of the four camps is 603,550, and the Levites are not included.
- Numbers 1:46 (BSB)“And all those counted totaled 603,550.”The census total in chapter 1 is the same figure.
- Numbers 1:47 (BSB)“The Levites, however, were not numbered along with them by the tribe of their fathers.”The Levites had also been left out of the census in chapter 1.

True or False: The camp total in 2:32 exceeds the census total of 1:46 because the Levites are included.
Answer: False
This is false. The sum of the four camps is 603,550 (2:32), identical to the census total (1:46). The Levites remain excluded (2:33; cf. 1:47), since they encamped as a separate inner cordon around the sanctuary rather than within the tribal camps.

According to 2:34, how did the Israelites respond to these instructions?
Answer: They camped and marched just as God ordered
Israel obeyed God completely. They camped by their banners in the order God gave, and they broke camp in that same order, every man with his own family group (2:34). Their whole life in the wilderness, when to camp and when to move, was directed by God's word (9:23). The orderly camp shows the character of God Himself. Paul says God brings peace, not disorder, and he tells the church to conduct everything properly and in good order (1 Corinthians 14:33, 40).
- Numbers 2:34 (BSB)“So the Israelites did everything the LORD commanded Moses; they camped under their standards in this way and set out in the same way, each man with his clan and his family.”Israel camps and sets out exactly in the arrangement God gave.
- Numbers 9:23 (BSB)“They camped at the LORD’s command, and they set out at the LORD’s command; they carried out the LORD’s charge according to His command through Moses.”Israel's camping and marching were governed by the LORD's command through Moses.
- 1 Corinthians 14:33 (BSB)“For God is not a God of disorder, but of peace—as in all the churches of the saints.”Paul says God is a God of peace rather than disorder.
- 1 Corinthians 14:40 (BSB)“But everything must be done in a proper and orderly manner.”Paul calls for everything in the church to be done in a fitting and orderly way.

What does 2:34 record about Israel's response to the camp arrangement?
Answer: They camped and marched just as God ordered
Israel obeyed fully, encamping by their standards and marching in that identical order, each by clan and family (2:34), just as their encampments and departures were governed throughout by the LORD's command through Moses (9:23). The ordered camp reflects the character of God, who brings peace rather than disorder and whose people are to conduct everything fittingly and in good order (1 Corinthians 14:33, 40).

Which camp was to march at the very end of the line?
Answer: Dan's camp
Dan's camp, with Asher and Naphtali, was stationed to the north and set out last (2:25-31). With 157,600 men, it was the second largest camp, and on the march it guarded the rear, protecting the whole column from behind (10:25). All three of these tribes descended from sons Jacob had through the servant women Bilhah and Zilpah (Genesis 35:25-26).
- Numbers 2:25 (BSB)“On the north side, the divisions of Dan are to camp under their standard: The leader of the Danites is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai,”Dan's camp is placed on the north side of the tabernacle.
- Numbers 2:31 (BSB)“The total number of men in the camp of Dan is 157,600; they shall set out last, under their standards.””Dan's camp totals 157,600 and is to set out last.
- Numbers 10:25 (BSB)“Finally, the divisions of the camp of Dan set out under their standard, serving as the rear guard for all units, with Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai in command.”When Israel marched, Dan's camp came last as the rear guard for the whole column.
- Genesis 35:25-26 (BSB)“The sons of Rachel’s maidservant Bilhah were Dan and Naphtali. And the sons of Leah’s maidservant Zilpah were Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan-aram.”Dan, Naphtali, and Asher were sons of Jacob by the maidservants Bilhah and Zilpah.

Which two tribes camped with Judah on the eastern side of the camp?
Answer: Issachar and Zebulun
Judah camped toward the east, where the sun rises, with Issachar and Zebulun beside it (2:3-7). All three were sons of Jacob by his wife Leah (Genesis 35:23), so this camp grouped closely related tribes together. When Israel later broke camp, these same three tribes marched out together at the front (10:14-16).
- Numbers 2:3-7 (BSB)“On the east side, toward the sunrise, the divisions of Judah are to camp under their standard: The leader of the Judahites is Nahshon son of Amminadab, and his division numbers 74,600. The tribe of Issachar will camp next to it. The leader of the Issacharites is Nethanel son of Zuar, and his division numbers 54,400. Next will be the tribe of Zebulun. The leader of the Zebulunites is Eliab son of Helon,”Judah camps on the east, with Issachar and Zebulun alongside.
- Genesis 35:23 (BSB)“The sons of Leah were Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.”Lists Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun among the sons born to Leah.
- Numbers 10:14-16 (BSB)“First, the divisions of the camp of Judah set out under their standard, with Nahshon son of Amminadab in command. Nethanel son of Zuar was over the division of the tribe of Issachar, and Eliab son of Helon was over the division of the tribe of Zebulun.”On the march, Issachar and Zebulun move out together with Judah's camp.
Theological
Which tribes are grouped with Judah in the eastern camp?
Answer: Issachar and Zebulun
The eastern camp, facing the sunrise, comprised Judah together with Issachar and Zebulun (2:3-7), all sons of Leah (Genesis 35:23). The same grouping departed together at the head of the column when Israel left Sinai (10:14-16).

Which camp was to lead the way whenever Israel broke camp and moved on?
Answer: Judah's camp
Judah's camp, 186,400 men, was to march first (2:9), and that is exactly what happened when Israel left Sinai (10:14). Reuben was the firstborn, but Judah took the lead. This fits Jacob's blessing, which promised that the scepter, a symbol of royal rule, would belong to Judah (Genesis 49:10). Judah became the tribe of King David, and ultimately of Jesus, who descended from Judah (Hebrews 7:14).
- Numbers 2:9 (BSB)“The total number of men in the divisions of the camp of Judah is 186,400; they shall set out first.”Judah's camp totals 186,400 and is to set out first.
- Numbers 10:14 (BSB)“First, the divisions of the camp of Judah set out under their standard, with Nahshon son of Amminadab in command.”When Israel leaves Sinai, Judah's camp does in fact move out first, led by Nahshon.
- Genesis 49:10 (BSB)“The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes and the allegiance of the nations is his.”Jacob promised that the scepter would remain with Judah.
- Hebrews 7:14 (BSB)“For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, a tribe as to which Moses said nothing about priests.”Affirms that the Lord Jesus came from the tribe of Judah.
Theological
Which camp is assigned the lead position in the order of march (2:9)?
Answer: Judah's camp
Judah's camp of 186,400 was to break camp first (2:9), and it led the departure from Sinai (10:14). The precedence given to Judah over Reuben, the firstborn, anticipates the royal preeminence promised in Jacob's blessing (Genesis 49:10), realized in the Davidic line and finally in Christ, who arose from Judah (Hebrews 7:14).

True or False: Judah's camp on the east was the largest of the four camps.
Answer: True
This is true. Judah's camp numbered 186,400 (2:9), more than Dan's 157,600 (2:31), Reuben's 151,450 (2:16), or Ephraim's 108,100 (2:24). The largest camp was also the one that led the march. This matches what Scripture says about Judah: Jacob foretold that his brothers would honor him (Genesis 49:8), and the Chronicler notes that Judah grew strongest of the brothers and produced a ruler (1 Chronicles 5:1-2).
- Numbers 2:9 (BSB)“The total number of men in the divisions of the camp of Judah is 186,400; they shall set out first.”Judah's camp numbers 186,400, the largest of the four camps.
- Genesis 49:8 (BSB)“Judah, your brothers shall praise you. Your hand shall be on the necks of your enemies; your father’s sons shall bow down to you.”Jacob foretold that Judah would be honored above his brothers.
- 1 Chronicles 5:1-2 (BSB)“These were the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel. Though he was the firstborn, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel, because Reuben defiled his father’s bed. So he is not reckoned according to birthright. And though Judah prevailed over his brothers and a ruler came from him, the birthright belonged to Joseph.”Records that Judah prevailed over his brothers and that a ruler came from him.

Which tribes made up the western camp?
Answer: Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin
The western camp was led by Ephraim, with Manasseh and Benjamin beside it (2:18-24). These three tribes all came from Rachel, Jacob's beloved wife: Ephraim and Manasseh through her son Joseph, and Benjamin as her other son (Genesis 35:24). Psalm 80 names the same three tribes together (Psalm 80:1-2). This was the smallest of the four camps at 108,100, and it set out third (2:24; 10:22).
- Numbers 2:18-24 (BSB)“On the west side, the divisions of Ephraim are to camp under their standard: The leader of the Ephraimites is Elishama son of Ammihud, and his division numbers 40,500. The tribe of Manasseh will be next to it. The leader of the Manassites is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur, and his division numbers 32,200. Next will be the tribe of Benjamin. The leader of the Benjamites is Abidan son of Gideoni, and his division numbers 35,400. The total number of men in the divisions of the camp of Ephraim is 108,100; they shall set out third.”Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin camp on the west, totaling 108,100, and set out third.
- Genesis 35:24 (BSB)“The sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin.”Identifies Joseph and Benjamin as the sons of Rachel.
- Psalm 80:1-2 (BSB)“For the choirmaster. To the tune of “The Lilies of the Covenant.” A Psalm of Asaph. Hear us, O Shepherd of Israel, who leads Joseph like a flock; You who sit enthroned between the cherubim, shine forth before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Rally Your mighty power and come to save us.”Names Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh together as the tribes the Shepherd of Israel leads.
- Numbers 10:22 (BSB)“Next, the divisions of the camp of Ephraim set out under their standard, with Elishama son of Ammihud in command.”On the march, Ephraim's camp sets out after the Kohathites.

Which tribes compose the western camp in chapter 2?
Answer: Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin
The western camp comprised Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin (2:18-24), the Rachel tribes, descended from Joseph and Benjamin (Genesis 35:24) and grouped together again in Psalm 80:1-2. It was the smallest camp at 108,100 and departed third (2:24; 10:22).
- Numbers 2:18-24 (BSB)“On the west side, the divisions of Ephraim are to camp under their standard: The leader of the Ephraimites is Elishama son of Ammihud, and his division numbers 40,500. Where did Reuben's camp, with Simeon and Gad, set up its tents in relation to the tabernacle?
Answer: The south side
Reuben's camp, made up of Reuben, Simeon, and Gad, camped to the south (2:10-15). With 151,450 men, it was to set out second, right after Judah (2:16; 10:18). Between this camp and the tabernacle were the Kohathites, a clan of the Levites, whose tents were also on the south (3:29). Every tribe had its assigned place, so the camp could be pitched and moved in an orderly way.
- Numbers 2:10 (BSB)“On the south side, the divisions of Reuben are to camp under their standard: The leader of the Reubenites is Elizur son of Shedeur,”Reuben's camp is placed on the south side of the tabernacle.
- Numbers 2:16 (BSB)“The total number of men in the divisions of the camp of Reuben is 151,450; they shall set out second.”Reuben's camp totals 151,450 and sets out second.
- Numbers 10:18 (BSB)“Then the divisions of the camp of Reuben set out under their standard, with Elizur son of Shedeur in command.”On the march, Reuben's camp moves out after Judah's.
- Numbers 3:29 (BSB)“The clans of the Kohathites were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle,”The Kohathite Levites camped on the same south side, nearer to the tabernacle.
Theological
Where was Reuben's camp, with Simeon and Gad, positioned relative to the tabernacle?
Answer: The south side
Reuben, Simeon, and Gad formed the southern camp (2:10-15), numbering 151,450 and departing second after Judah (2:16; 10:18). The Kohathite Levites occupied the inner ring on the same side (3:29), so the tribal camp stood behind the Levitical cordon around the sanctuary.
- Numbers 2:10 (BSB)“On the south side, the divisions of Reuben are to camp under their standard: The leader of the Reubenites is Elizur son of Shedeur,”Reuben's camp is placed on the south side of the tabernacle.

According to 2:2, where did the tribes pitch their camps in relation to the Tent of Meeting?
Answer: Around it on every side, but at a distance
God told the Israelites to pitch their tents on all sides of the Tent of Meeting, each man under the banner of his family, but to keep some space between themselves and it (2:2). The tent where God dwelt stood at the very center of the camp. God had said the purpose of the sanctuary was so that He could live among His people (Exodus 25:8), and He promised to walk among them as their God (Leviticus 26:11-12). The distance showed that He is holy and must be approached with reverence, as Israel was reminded again when they crossed the Jordan behind the ark (Joshua 3:4). God was near, and God was holy.
- Numbers 2:2 (BSB)““The Israelites are to camp around the Tent of Meeting at a distance from it, each man under his standard, with the banners of his family.”God orders the tribes to camp around the Tent of Meeting, each under its banner, keeping some distance from it.
- Exodus 25:8 (BSB)“And they are to make a sanctuary for Me, so that I may dwell among them.”God's stated purpose for the sanctuary was to dwell among His people.
- Leviticus 26:11-12 (BSB)“And I will make My dwelling place among you, and My soul will not despise you. I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be My people.”God promises to make His dwelling among Israel and walk among them as their God.
- Joshua 3:4 (BSB)“But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between yourselves and the ark. Do not go near it, so that you can see the way to go, since you have never traveled this way before.””Later Israel is again told to keep a set distance from the ark, showing reverence for God's holy presence.
Theological
How does 2:2 arrange the tribal camps relative to the Tent of Meeting?
Answer: Around it on every side, but at a distance
The tribes were to encamp on every side of the sanctuary while keeping their distance, each under his standard and ancestral banner (2:2). The arrangement is theological architecture: the LORD's dwelling stands at the center of His people, fulfilling the purpose of the sanctuary (Exodus 25:8) and the covenant promise of His presence (Leviticus 26:11-12), while the prescribed distance, echoed at the Jordan (Joshua 3:4), guards the holiness of that presence. Immanence and transcendence are held together in the very layout of the camp.

According to 2:17, where were the Tent of Meeting and the Levites placed when Israel was on the march?
Answer: In the middle, between the camps
The Tent of Meeting traveled with the Levites at the center of the marching order (2:17). Chapter 10 shows how this worked: after Judah's camp set out, the Gershonite and Merarite Levites carried the tabernacle's frame and coverings, and after Reuben's camp came the Kohathites with the holy objects (10:17, 21). God's dwelling was surrounded by His people whether they were camped or moving. God walked in the midst of Israel's camp to protect them (Deuteronomy 23:14).
- Numbers 2:17 (BSB)“In the middle of the camps, the Tent of Meeting is to travel with the camp of the Levites. They are to set out in the order they encamped, each in his own place under his standard.”The Tent of Meeting travels with the Levites in the middle of the marching camps.
- Numbers 10:17 (BSB)“Then the tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonites and the Merarites set out, transporting it.”When Israel marched, the Gershonites and Merarites carried the dismantled tabernacle after Judah's camp.
- Numbers 10:21 (BSB)“Then the Kohathites set out, transporting the holy objects; the tabernacle was to be set up before their arrival.”The Kohathites followed later with the holy objects, so the tabernacle was carried within the column.
- Deuteronomy 23:14 (BSB)“For the LORD your God walks throughout your camp to protect you and deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, lest He see anything unclean among you and turn away from you.”God moves through the midst of Israel's camp to protect His people.
Theological
What position does 2:17 give the Tent of Meeting in the order of march?
Answer: In the middle, between the camps
The Tent of Meeting was to set out with the Levites in the midst of the camps (2:17). Chapter 10 fills in the sequence: the Gershonites and Merarites carried the structure after Judah, and the Kohathites carried the holy objects after Reuben (10:17, 21). Whether encamped or on the move, the LORD's dwelling remained at the center of His people, the God who walks in the midst of the camp (Deuteronomy 23:14).
