Numbers 1 Devotional

Every Name on the Roll

““Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.”Numbers 1:2 (BSB)

Numbers begins with a roll call. In the second year after the exodus, God tells Moses to count Israel's fighting men by clan and family, recording each man's name individually (1:2, 18). The total comes to 603,550 (1:46). Long before, God had taken Abraham outside, told him to try counting the stars, and promised that his offspring would be like them (Genesis 15:5). Here that promise shows up in a ledger.

But the census is not only about size. Each man is registered by name, not simply absorbed into a total. And the Levites are left out of the count for a reason: they are to camp around the tabernacle and guard it, so that God's anger does not strike the people (1:50-53). A people numbered for battle is first a people arranged around a holy God. The chapter closes with Israel doing everything the LORD commanded (1:54). The God who keeps promises across centuries also knows his people one name at a time, and that includes you.

To think about: What difference does it make to you today that God knows you by name and not only as part of a crowd?

About Numbers 1: The First Census

In the wilderness of Sinai the Lord commands Moses to count every Israelite man twenty years or older able to go to war, with a leader from each tribe assisting. The total is 603,550, but the Levites are not counted, being set apart to care for and camp around the tabernacle.
