Job 41 Devotional

Owing Nothing to Anyone

“Who has given to Me that I should repay him? Everything under heaven is Mine.”Job 41:11 (BSB)

The LORD's second speech closes with Leviathan. Can Job catch him with a hook, make him plead for mercy, or keep him on a leash like a pet bird (41:1-5)? Anyone who lays a hand on him once will never try it again (41:8). His scales are sealed so tightly that no air passes between them. Sparks and smoke pour from his mouth and nostrils, and swords, spears, and arrows do nothing to him (41:15-29).

God draws the point. If no one dares to rouse Leviathan, who could stand against God? Has anyone ever given God something that put God in their debt? All that exists belongs to him (41:10-11). Paul echoes this question as he praises God's mercy (Romans 11:35). God does not owe anyone, and that is exactly what makes his kindness grace. Job had demanded that God answer his case (31:35). God shows him that the Maker of Leviathan is in debt to no one. Whatever he gives, then, is a gift, received with open hands rather than earned.

To think about: What would change if you received God's kindness today as a free gift rather than something owed?

About Job 41: The LORD Describes Leviathan

The LORD continues His second speech by asking whether Job could catch or tame the fearsome Leviathan. Since no one dares to rouse this creature, no one can stand against God, who owes nothing to anyone and owns all things. The poem pictures Leviathan's armor, fiery breath and strength, which no weapon can overcome.
