Job 42 Devotional

From Hearing to Seeing

“My ears had heard of You, but now my eyes have seen You.”Job 42:5 (BSB)

Job's final words are not an argument but a confession. God's power has no limit, and nothing can block his purposes (42:2). Job spoke of things beyond his understanding (42:3). Before, he had only heard about God; now he has seen him, and he repents, humbled before him (42:5-6). Job's response comes after meeting God, not after receiving an explanation.

The LORD turns to the friends. Unlike Job, they have not spoken the truth about him (42:7). Job prays for them, and the LORD accepts his prayer (42:8-9). Afterward God restores Job's fortunes twice over and gives him seven sons and three daughters (42:10-16). James points to Job's endurance and to what the Lord brought about, because the Lord is deeply compassionate and merciful (James 5:11). Not every story of suffering ends with this restoration in this life, and the book does not promise it. What it does show is the Lord's compassion, and a man who finally saw him. That sight is the hope held out to all who suffer.

To think about: What would it mean for you to know God not only by hearing about him but by meeting him in your own suffering?

About Job 42: Job Repents and Is Restored

Job confesses that God can do anything, admits he spoke of things beyond him, and repents after meeting God for himself. The LORD rebukes Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar, who must offer sacrifices while Job prays for them. God then restores Job with double his former wealth, a new family and a long life.
