2 Kings 9 Devotional
The God Who Saw Naboth
“‘As surely as I saw the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons yesterday, declares the LORD, so will I repay you on this plot of ground, declares the LORD.’ Now then, according to the word of the LORD, pick him up and throw him on the plot of ground.””2 Kings 9:26 (BSB)
A young prophet anoints Jehu and runs (9:6-10). The commission is grim: the LORD will judge the house of Ahab for the blood of the prophets and servants of the LORD shed by Jezebel (9:7). What follows is fast and violent. Jehu kills King Joram, has Ahaziah of Judah shot, and Jezebel is thrown from a window (9:24-33). Nothing here holds Jehu up as a model.
The point the text keeps returning to is that the LORD's word came true. Joram's body is thrown onto the plot of ground that had belonged to Naboth, whose blood the LORD says he saw (9:25-26). Years earlier, the LORD had sent Elijah to confront Ahab for murdering Naboth and seizing his land (1 Kings 21:19). Jezebel's end also matches Elijah's word (9:36). Naboth had no one to defend him, but the LORD saw and remembered. For anyone who has been wronged and never seen justice, this chapter says that God sees, and his justice does not forget.
To think about: What wrong done to you or to others do you need to entrust to the God who sees and remembers?
