2 Kings 8 Devotional

A Promise Outliving Its Kings

“Yet for the sake of His servant David, the LORD was unwilling to destroy Judah, since He had promised to maintain a lamp for David and his descendants forever.”2 Kings 8:19 (BSB)

The Shunammite woman whose son Elisha raised returns after seven years away and asks the king for her house and land. She arrives at the very moment Gehazi is telling the king about her son (8:5), and the king restores everything, even the produce of her field (8:6). Nothing in that timing is accidental to the God who had sent her to safety (8:1).

Then the chapter darkens. Elisha weeps before Hazael, because the LORD has shown him the harm Hazael will do to Israel (8:11-12). In Judah, King Jehoram walks in the ways of Ahab's house. Yet the LORD is unwilling to destroy Judah for the sake of his servant David, because he had promised to keep David's lamp burning (8:19). He had sworn that David's throne would be established forever (2 Samuel 7:16). Kings failed, but the promise held, all the way to Jesus. Your hope rests on that faithfulness, not on how well the people around you perform.

To think about: Where are you tempted to measure God's faithfulness by the failures of the people around you?
