2 Kings 7 Devotional

Good News Too Good to Keep

“Finally, they said to one another, “We are not doing what is right. Today is a day of good news. If we are silent and wait until morning light, our sin will overtake us. Now, therefore, let us go and tell the king’s household.””2 Kings 7:9 (BSB)

Samaria is starving under siege when Elisha announces that within a day flour and barley will sell cheaply at the city gate (7:1). The king's officer scoffs that it could not happen even if the LORD opened the sky, and Elisha tells him he will witness it without tasting it (7:2). That night the Lord makes the Aramean army hear the sound of chariots and horses, and they flee, leaving their camp intact (7:6-7).

The first to discover it are four men with leprosy, outsiders at the gate with nothing to lose. They eat, hide some silver and gold, and then stop. Silence would be wrong, they admit, on a day of such good news (7:9). By the next day food is cheap, just as the LORD said, and the doubting officer is trampled in the gateway (7:16-20). The LORD keeps his word exactly, both promise and warning. Those who have found his provision have every reason to go and tell others where the bread is.

To think about: What good news about God have you received that you have been keeping to yourself?

About 2 Kings 7: Four Lepers Find the Camp Deserted

Elisha announces that the famine in Samaria will end by the next day, and an officer who mocks the promise is told he will see it but not eat. Four lepers find the Aramean camp abandoned, since the Lord made the army flee at a sound of attack. Food becomes cheap, and the officer is trampled at the gate.
