Titus 2 Devotional

Schooled by Grace

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to everyone.”Titus 2:11 (BSB)

Titus 2 gives instructions for nearly everyone in the church. Older men are to be self-controlled and sound in faith, love, and endurance. Older women are to be reverent and to teach what is good, training younger women to love their husbands and children, to manage their homes, and to be submissive to their own husbands. Younger men and slaves are addressed too (2:2-10). The reasons given look outward: that God's word not be discredited and that the teaching about God our Savior be made attractive (2:5, 10).

Then Paul explains where such a life comes from. God's grace has come into view, bringing salvation, and that grace itself instructs us to say no to ungodliness and to live upright lives now (2:11-12). We wait for the glorious appearing of Jesus Christ, whom Paul calls our great God and Savior, who gave himself to redeem us and make us his own people, eager to do good (2:13-14). Grace does not only forgive. It teaches, day by day, those it has already saved.

To think about: What is grace teaching you to say no to, and what good is it teaching you to say yes to?

About Titus 2: Sound Doctrine and the Grace That Trains

Paul tells Titus to teach what fits sound doctrine, with instructions for older men and women, younger women and men, and slaves. The grace of God that brings salvation trains believers to renounce ungodliness while they wait for the appearing of Jesus Christ.
