Titus 1 Devotional

Hope Promised Before Time

“in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.”Titus 1:2 (BSB)

Titus opens with a long greeting that grounds everything in God's own character. Paul serves the faith of God's chosen people, resting on the hope of eternal life that God, who never lies, promised before time began (1:1-2). Then he gets to work. Titus is to appoint elders in every town on Crete, men known for being blameless, faithful at home, hospitable, self-controlled, and holding firmly to the trustworthy word so they can encourage others and correct those who oppose it (1:5-9).

The need is urgent. Many are teaching for dishonest gain and upsetting whole households (1:10-11). The chapter closes by describing people who claim to know God but deny him by what they do (1:16). Words alone do not show that someone knows God. Yet the answer to false teaching here is not suspicion but sound teaching and godly leaders who live it out. Because God's promise is older than time and cannot fail, his people can build their lives, and their churches, on his word with confidence.

To think about: How does knowing that God's promise cannot fail shape the way you live out what you say you believe?

About Titus 1: Qualified Elders and False Teachers

Paul greets Titus and charges him to appoint elders in every town on Crete who are blameless, self-controlled, and hold firmly to sound teaching. Such leaders are needed to refute the many empty talkers and deceivers who profess to know God but deny him by their works.
