Song of Solomon 7 Devotional

Desire With a Safe Home

“I belong to my beloved, and his desire is for me.”Song of Solomon 7:10 (BSB)

Song 7 opens with the bridegroom's praise of his bride, moving through image after image, from her sandaled feet to her head, which crowns her like Mount Carmel (7:1-5). The poem speaks of desire openly, yet with care, through pictures of vines, palm trees, and fruit.

Then the bride answers with calm confidence: she belongs to her beloved, and he longs for her (7:10). She invites him to the countryside, to the vineyards in spring, and tells him she has stored up delights both new and old for him (7:11-13). Within marriage, desire is part of what God made good, not something shameful. Proverbs urges a husband to rejoice in the wife of his youth (Proverbs 5:18), and the Song shows that joy running both ways. Marriage is meant to be a place where both partners are wanted and both are free to give themselves. The limits God places around desire do not deny it. They give it a safe home in which to flourish.

To think about: How might seeing desire as God's good design, guarded by his limits, shape the way you think about love today?
