Song of Solomon 6 Devotional

Chosen Out of Many

“I belong to my beloved and he belongs to me; he pastures his flock among the lilies.”Song of Solomon 6:3 (BSB)

Song 6 begins with the daughters of Jerusalem offering to help look for the beloved (6:1). The woman answers that he has gone down to his garden, and then she states the heart of the whole Song: she belongs to her beloved, and he belongs to her (6:3). She is as lovely as Tirzah and Jerusalem, as majestic as an army with banners, and her eyes overwhelm him (6:4-5). There are sixty queens, eighty concubines, and countless young women, but she is unique, his perfect one (6:8-9).

This is love that singles out one person and stays fixed there. Faithful, exclusive love is not a narrowing of joy but its setting. It also echoes the character of God himself, whom Moses calls the faithful God who keeps his covenant love to a thousand generations (Deuteronomy 7:9). Belonging to someone, and having them belong to you, is meant to be a place of security rather than anxiety. That kind of love grows from treasuring what has been given rather than always looking elsewhere.

To think about: What would it look like to treasure the people and gifts God has given you instead of comparing them with others?
