Psalm 91 Devotional

Sheltered Under His Wings

“When he calls out to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him.”Psalm 91:15 (BSB)

Psalm 91 describes the security of someone who makes the Most High his dwelling and rests under the Almighty's protection (91:1). God covers that person like a bird spreading its wings, and his faithfulness guards like a shield (91:4). There is no need to fear terror at night or arrows by day (91:5-6). God will command his angels to guard such a person wherever he goes (91:11-12).

This psalm can be misused. The devil quoted its promise of angels to tempt Jesus to jump from the temple, and Jesus refused to put God to the test (Matthew 4:5-7). These promises are not a lever to force God's hand or a guarantee that trouble never comes. In fact, the psalm ends with God himself speaking. When the one who loves him calls, God will answer, stay beside him when trouble comes, and rescue and honor him (91:14-15). The promise is not the absence of trouble but the presence of God in it. You can rest in that shelter without demanding that God prove it.

To think about: What danger or fear are you facing, and what would it mean to rest in God's presence with you in it?

About Psalm 91: Safe in God's Shelter

The psalm describes the security of the one who takes refuge in the Most High, pictured as a fortress and as a bird spreading its wings over those it shelters. It promises God's protection and angelic care, then closes with God's own pledge to rescue, answer, and stay with the one who loves Him.
