Psalm 20 Devotional

Better Than Chariots and Horses

“Some trust in chariots and others in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.”Psalm 20:7 (BSB)

On the day of trouble, the people pray for their king. They ask the LORD to answer him, protect him, send help from his holy place, and make his plans succeed (20:1-4). They are ready to shout for joy at his victory and raise their banners in God's name (20:5).

Then a single voice speaks with new confidence: the LORD rescues his anointed king and answers him from heaven (20:6). The heart of the psalm follows. Others may rely on chariots and horses, but God's people rely on the LORD's name (20:7). Those who lean on chariots collapse; those who lean on God rise and stand firm (20:8). This is not a promise that faith wins every battle on our timetable. It is a statement about where safety is actually found. Every age has its own chariots, from savings accounts to reputations. The psalm invites you to name yours and to put your weight on the LORD instead.

To think about: What chariot are you tempted to lean on today, and what would it look like to trust the name of the LORD instead?

About Psalm 20: A Prayer for the King Before Battle

The people pray that God will answer, protect, and grant victory to their king in a time of trouble. A voice then declares confidence that God will rescue His chosen king, contrasting those who rely on chariots and horses with those who trust in God's name, and the psalm ends with a plea to save the king.
