Psalm 13 Devotional

Asking How Long

“But I have trusted in Your loving devotion; my heart will rejoice in Your salvation.”Psalm 13:5 (BSB)

Four times in two verses, David asks the same question: how long (13:1-2)? How long will God seem to forget? How long will he hide his face? How long must sorrow fill each day while the enemy gains ground? David does not soften any of it. He asks God to look, to answer, and to give light to his eyes before he sinks into death (13:3).

Then, with nothing outward changed, the psalm turns. David has trusted in God's loving devotion, and his heart will rejoice in God's salvation (13:5). He will sing, because the LORD has been good to him (13:6). The trust does not cancel the lament; it grows out of it. Faith can say both things in one breath: this is unbearable, and God is faithful. Waiting on God is not pretending the waiting is easy. It is bringing the long days to the one whose love has held before, and asking him to show it again. This is a psalm to pray word for word on the day you feel forgotten.

To think about: Which how-long question are you carrying right now, and what has God's past goodness given you to hold on to while you wait?

About Psalm 13: From Lament to Trust

David repeatedly asks how long God will seem to forget him while his enemy triumphs. He pleads for God to answer and revive him, then turns to trust in God's loving devotion and ends by singing of God's goodness to him.
