Psalm 12 Devotional

Words That Can Be Trusted

“The words of the LORD are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace, like gold purified sevenfold.”Psalm 12:6 (BSB)

Here is a prayer for a world full of talk. David cries for help because the faithful seem to have vanished, and everyone speaks with flattery and a divided heart (12:1-2). Some even boast that their tongues will win the day and that no one can master their lips (12:4). Words have become both weapons and masks.

Into that noise God speaks. For the sake of the oppressed and the groaning of the needy, he says he will now rise and bring them to safety (12:5). The psalm marvels at what kind of words these are: flawless, like silver tested in the fire and gold purified again and again (12:6). Human speech in this psalm is slippery and self-serving. God's word is tested, and it holds. The closing verses admit that the wicked still roam freely (12:8), yet God will keep and guard his people (12:7). In a culture of spin and flattery, there is a word you can rest your whole weight on: the promise of the LORD himself.

To think about: Which voices have been shaping you most this week, and how could God's trustworthy word speak louder among them?

About Psalm 12: Lying Lips and God's Pure Words

David cries for help in a time when faithful people seem gone and everyone deceives with flattery and boasting. The LORD promises to rise up for the oppressed, and His words are praised as perfectly pure, like refined silver, as He guards His people.
