Psalm 106 Devotional

Mercy That Outlasts Rebellion

“Nevertheless He heard their cry; He took note of their distress.”Psalm 106:44 (BSB)

After a burst of thanks for the LORD's enduring love (106:1), this psalm turns to confession. The psalmist admits that his generation has sinned just like its ancestors (106:6), and he tells the family history honestly. Israel rebelled at the sea, yet God saved them for his name's sake (106:7-8). They sang his praise, then quickly forgot (106:12-13). They made a calf at Horeb, trading their glorious God for the image of an ox (106:19-20). They despised the land, joined in pagan worship, and even sacrificed their children to idols (106:24-38).

Judgment came (106:40-42), but verse 44 turns the story. God still heard their cry, remembered his covenant, and relented because of his great loving devotion (106:44-45). Twice the story pauses on someone standing between the people and wrath, Moses and Phinehas (106:23, 30). Hebrews says Jesus lives forever to plead for those who draw near to God through him (Hebrews 7:25). Honest confession is safe, because God's mercy has outlasted centuries of rebellion.

To think about: What pattern of sin in your life could you name honestly before God today, trusting the one who intercedes for you?

About Psalm 106: Israel's Rebellions and God's Mercy
