Psalm 104 Devotional

The Open Hand of the Creator

“All creatures look to You to give them their food in due season.”Psalm 104:27 (BSB)

Psalm 104 walks through creation like a guide pointing out one wonder after another. God wraps himself in light and stretches out the heavens like a tent (104:2). He sets the waters a boundary (104:9), sends springs where wild donkeys drink and birds sing (104:10-12), and grows grass for cattle and crops for people, with bread for strength and wine for gladness (104:14-15). Even the roaring lions seek their food from God (104:21).

The point is not only that God made all this once. He keeps it going. Every creature looks to him for its food at the right time, and when he opens his hand they are satisfied (104:27-28). When he takes away their breath, they return to dust; when he sends his Spirit, life is renewed (104:29-30). Jesus pointed to the same care when he said God feeds the birds (Matthew 6:26). Your next meal and your next breath come from that same open hand, which makes every ordinary day a reason for thanks.

To think about: What ordinary provision in your day could you receive as coming directly from God's open hand?

About Psalm 104: The Creator Who Sustains All Things

The psalmist praises God as the majestic Creator, robed in light, who holds the seas within their limits. He describes springs, crops, trees, animals, the moon and sun, and the sea with its creatures, all depending on God for food and breath, and closes with a vow of lifelong praise and a plea for wickedness to end.
