Proverbs 8 Devotional

Wisdom Beside the Creator

“For whoever finds me finds life and obtains the favor of the LORD.”Proverbs 8:35 (BSB)

In Proverbs 8, Wisdom speaks for herself. She stands where roads meet, calling to everyone and offering instruction worth more than silver and gold (8:1-11). Then she tells where she came from. Before the mountains were settled or the springs flowed, she was there with the LORD as he established the heavens, fenced in the sea, and marked out the earth's foundations (8:22-29). She was his delight, and she took joy in his world and in its people (8:30-31).

The point is that the wisdom offered to ordinary people at the city gate is the same wisdom by which God made the world. The New Testament takes this further. Paul calls Christ the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24) and says every treasure of wisdom and knowledge is found in him (Colossians 2:3). The poem should not be pressed into a detailed portrait of Christ, but it points toward him. Whoever finds wisdom finds life and receives the LORD's favor (8:35), and in the end that life is found in Jesus.

To think about: Where are you looking for wisdom for the decisions in front of you, and what would it mean to seek it in Christ?

About Proverbs 8: Wisdom Calls and Was There at Creation

Wisdom stands at the city gates and crossroads, urging everyone to prize her honest instruction above silver and gold. She claims rulers govern well through her, recalls being beside the LORD before and during creation, and promises life and the LORD's favor to whoever finds her.
